Winds of Change

Ajda Murnik, Matevž Dražumerič, Luka Čuš  |   2021

To make space truly come to life, we need to return it to nature, while meeting the needs of society and industry. The latter, despite its negative effects on the environment and space, is recognised as a strong building cornerstone of Ajdovščina's history and identity. The project reinvents production in a way that it becomes integrated into everyday people lives.

At present, the river is confined to its longitudinal line by the industrial boundaries, so we are creating a contact line with industry and extending the riverside space by creating a waterfront. During the development phases, nature penetrates deeper and deeper between the industrial sites.

The project consist of five infrastructure envelopes which acts as renewable energy generators. The funnels in which the wind turbines generate electricity are designed to capture as much of the wind flow as possible, while at the same time dictating the structure of the building. Next to the Savonius wind turbine is a generator that sends the energy to the core of the building, where it is stored in a tower made up of thousands of recycled Tesla car batteries. The cycle continues as the building uses the energy to produce food, the end consumer of which are the inhabitants of Ajdovščina. Rainwater from the roofs of the industrial plants is stored in the ribs of the canals, which are purely functional from a structural point of view, and which serve as an irrigation system for the entire greenhouse.

The project addresses the increasingly urgent issue of sustainability in a way that it inseparably integrates infrastructure into architecture.  It presents a new vision from which we perceive the relationship between industry, nature and society. A future vision.
