Light of Solitude

Ajda Murnik, Julia Koželj  |   2020 | architectural competition

At the top of the cliff, surrounded by a view of the open ocean, once stood a mighty fortress. Today, only the ruins that mark the historical past of the place remain lonely in the same place. Our goal is to protect you and show the power of a wall trapped in the past in parallel. The strong blocks covering the ruins of the fortress are carefully distanced, in such a way as to create a line through which ambient light passes. The apparent defiance of gravity is reminiscent of the main reason the fortress collapsed into the sea.

The four lines of the wall form a path that starts at the top. The visitor is first addressed by the entrance, where he meets a 'door' made of rubble and massive concrete blocks. The walls guide and generate an ambience of contemplation. There are almost no surroundings on the way, only at certain points the wall breaks and allows a pre-articulated view. While the visitor is surrounded by walls of local gravel, the lines let in light on the way to solitude.

At the last bend  the ambience changes. The walls and ruins are moved away and leveled with a platform aligned with the terrain. Just in front of the last line of ruins stands a pool dug into the ground filled with rainwater that connects the view to the ocean horizon. It is a place of freedom and peace.
